Orthopaedics in South Australia
Orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Chien-Wen Liew grew up and trained predominantly in Adelaide, South Australia. There are multiple hospitals in South Australia, including the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Flinders Medical Centre, Lyell Mcewin Hospital, Modbury Hospital and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. In addition to these public hospitals, there are multiple private hospitals, all of which are used to treat orthopaedic patients.
Dr Chien-Wen Liew went to school at Scotch College Adelaide, and subsequently completed his medical degree at Adelaide University. His orthopaedic training involved moving through almost all public and private hospitals in South Australia as well as the Northern Territory. After completing his advanced orthopaedic training, he continued his training overseas, with world leaders in minimally invasive surgery on the knee, hip and shoulder. This included training on the Direct Anterior Approach to the hip for total hip replacements, and Patient Specific Instrumentation for total knee replacements. Dr Chien-Wen Liew has a passion and is specialising in conditions and operations of the knee, hip and shoulder, where he performs sports and arthritis surgery on patients aged 14 – 100.
Dr Chien-Wen Liew joined Adelaide Orthopaedic and Trauma Specialists (AOTS) to form the newest orthopaedic group in South Australia. AOTS has 4 full time surgeons, performing private surgery throughout Adelaide, and the greater South Australian region. Each member of the group provides a regional service throughout South Australia, including Morphett vale, the Barossa Valley, Stirling, Mt Barker, Ceduna and further.
AOTS has developed Adelaide’s first 24 hour, 7 day a week rapid assessment service where general practitioners and emergency physicians can contact a surgeon directly, in order to prevent the long waits that often can occur in public and private hospitals. This is the first of its kind, providing access for orthopaedic trauma and sports injury.
